  1. Dang. This isn’t working. Did you get my comment? I tabbed to my name and it kicked out. I hope it saved it, it was longish.

  2. I would agree that privilege is the compass, although what privilege is, that a little more ambiguous. When privilege is defined as race (assuming non minority), color (lighter skin) socio economic (assuming only non whites have a hard upbringing), etc, this to me is too simplistic of an approach. The amount of black faces on a Board or within a company, doesn’t tell me if they are diverse, and it bothers me more when a privileaged black person is the face to represent minorities. I do agree however, the space that a minority “thinks” they can play is limited, but if they embrace their difference and use their common sense, then they CAN be the leaders in innovation. It may not work for the young black boy in school who was asking too many questions, true, and it may not work in the professional arena either, however, many people are changing the way they think towards non-white races.what I do love most about “diversity” (although I have become sick of that word throughout the years since it has descriminated against me personally) is that so many people have proved me wrong one how i first perceived them, so much that I can’t descriminate and I can’t stereotype. So hopefully we one day move away from counting the number of colored faces, and we look a little deeper.

    • thanks for your thoughts bridget, I appreciate your time.
#1) i do not think at any point i say anything about the number of Black people on a team determining the level of “diversity” and actually i’m not sure and will look again to see if i implied such but this blog post is not actually about “diversity”. This blog post is about something deeper, as you mentioned. This blog post is about the systemic and invisible processes in this society as a whole designed to limit access and privilege specifically of BLACK people.

while i appreciate your thoughts and lens on experiences of non Black people, that is not what i am focused on or talking about. i am speaking as a Black woman, living in very troubled times and so i speak from that reality, for myself. i am not speaking for poor whites, or all women or all Blacks for that matter. i am simply pointing out that these writers and thinkers of innovation seem to take their access and privileges allowing then to move in spaces that increase innovation thereby increasing social and professional capital, for granted. and i speak to this in terms of its impact on MY community. that is not to say it doesn’t affect other communities but they can write their own blog or when i have time i can tackle the gender and latino aspect because again, that is what i know and that is all i will ever speak on.

#2) in a country that enslaved an entire africans for over 250 years with reasoning based on RACE, made light skinned Blacks house slaves (cause that skin colour made us more like them) and dark skinned Blacks relegated to the fields (cause that made us less like them, more animal) – skin color and race is ABSOLUTELY at the core of privilege in the US.

#3) the point of this piece is not about a company having a Black person to signify they are “diverse” or to have a token…reread #1

#4) its not about Black people thinking little of their ability – many of us know we are capable and often more so because we have to work harder – but you belittle your ability as a thinking people to think that is why Black people are so dismally represented in innovation and technology industries.

#5) if many people as you say are rethinking how they think towards “non-whites” where exactly do i look to, to see this in actual reality? talk is cheap and i have little interest in mere words.

and lastly #6) what i find interesting is that you point out examples of how my post is wrong but at no point speak to the main point, that access and privilege determine peoples fortunes and futures…which is a cornerstone of our capitalist society. my point is simple – the very traits that are being designed and established as the means to innovate and collaborate are not in question, but when the access and privilege pipeline is purposely blocked via failing public schools, prison industrial complex, increasing class divide with overwhelming impact on Black people and yet this TRUTH is denied for whatever reasons (guilt, greed, lack of knowing) – it becomes easy for whites to say, I cant find Black people to hire or I have no problem with Black people they just aren’t interested in this field and blah blah blah. the latter is bullshit but the former, the former is where and what I am writing from and about. i suspect this (can’t find Black people to hire) to be more true in 2013 than not.

do some research on how many Black men are in prison and cross check it for crimes for supposed drug abuse vs. violent crimes and in a nation where white people outnumber us something like 4 or 5 times in population and yet we make up something like 80% of the prison population and those in poverty……this is the problem I bring up. of course you cant find us to hire. the system is designed for that to be true.

i don’t care if there are diversity councils and that jazz. i care that we, Black people are being removed from the game so that we are not even in the running to be on these teams in the first place.
